Timber fretwork frame featuring a central soldier holding a rifle, behind which are two crossed flagpoles. Each 'flag' contains a postcard, with the one on the left being of British nurse, Edith Cavell, and the one on the right being of two Australian soldiers in uniform.
There is decorative scrollwork and ribbons beneath the central soldier and the word 'Defence" at the bottom.
The man on the left is believed to have served with the Royal Australian Naval Bridging Train. Despite being in the Navy, men in this unit were issued with the khaki Army uniforms and slouch hats. They wore a badge (representing a fouled anchor) in the centre of the front of their hat to distinguish their unit.
The man on the right is wearing shorts and a sun helmet. His rank of three stripes is visible on his sleeve.
Edith Cavell was a British nurse who served In German-occupied Belgium during WWI. Her story is detailed in an attached link to the Imperial War Museum.
One of the men pictured served with the RAN Bridging Train. A history of the unit is detailed in an attached link to the Australian War Memorial.
