Overview

Black and white drawing of a Grecian woman figurehead in profile. The hair is short and swept to the back in a high knot. A headband is below the knot. The band is wider at the back and side, narrowing to the front. There are four repeat motifs on the band graduating in size to the front. The upper part of the garment she is wearing is round necked and falls away, partly gathered.
The work is on cream paper and has a cream mount in a narrow black frame. It was drawn by Ann Elizabeth (known as Nancy)Turner while attending finishing school in Paris between 1826 and 1828. This information comes from a diary.
Information on the sketch itself is written on the reverse of the frame in blue pen.

TURNER, Ann Elizabeth (Mrs McDermott, Mrs Green 18111867)
Sketcher and painter, Nancy eldest child of James Woodward Turner and his first wife had studied in Paris and arrived with her parents and siblings. The family sailed from Portsmouth in 1829 arriving in Western Australia in 1830. The family, together with the Bussells and Molloys then sailed down to their grants at Augusta. Ann Eliza married James McDermott and then Dr Alfred Green. She had a daughter Ann Elizabeth McDermott. (qv) Examples of her work are at the Toodyay Gaol Museum. They include a pencil drawing of a Greek head. A series of her drawings c 1850 of York are in Battye Library. BL 4196/B1-29.
