'This is a Chinese 'thermos'. Chinese miners who came to seek gold in the rushes in Victoria and Western Australia brought them out from China. This teapot would have settled into a wicker basket that usually carried the teapot and two serving cups. Some baskets contained the teapot only. The basket was filled with straw for insulation and then lined with fabric. The metal handles of the pot would have had a thin strip of fabric wound around and around to protect the hands from the heat'.
