The Vasse Hotel (originally called "Vasse Inn") held the first license in Busselton. It was built in 1847 as a low built structure of wattle and daube. Gavin Forrest was the builder, and the first license was held by George Chapman. The original building was burned to the ground in December 1906, just after the new building on the south-west corner of Queen & Duchess St was finished.

Painted by Matt Robinson, a local Busselton signwriter who worked for Bay Signs.
This painting was found in a false wall in 1992 by a friend of the donor - he was renovating the Vasse Hotel at the time. The friend arranged for the painting to be restored and framed in Perth. In 2005, his friend gifted the painting to the donor whom has owned the painting since then. The donor had the painting stored at his studio "Glenellie Art Studio", Margaret River.
