THE BELL
c. 1970The club's bell, mounted on the wall in the lounge room, is rung to gather people's attention, typically prior to the start of the day's golf presentations. Previously, it was also the honour for any person achieving a hole in one to ring the bell to signal a round of free drinks for all the players that were present.
In newsletter November 2001 the editor (and previous golf professional) Peter Milton provided the origins of the bell:
The bell was manufactured by John Maskew, a foundation member of the club. John was a senior Fitting and Machining lecturer at Wembley College around the time that the club was founded in the late 1960s. He cast the bell in the college foundry. He was also a keen yachtsman, and he plaited the rope. He subsequently presented the bell to the club.
At the time of the Newsletter (2001) there was a member by the name of Harry Albert who was also a lecturer at Wembley College at the same time as John Maskew. Coincidentally it was Harry who finished the bell.
