World War II identity card
Identity cards were issued to all British subjects who were civilians during World War II. People were required to report changes of address to the government. The cards were particularly important in the identification and monitoring of Aliens (non-citizen residents). 52 000 people were defined as Aliens during the war, with about 43% of them an enemy aliens, mainly German, Italian and Japanese.
