REMNANT OF PAGE FROM SHIP'S REGISTER

1858
Overview

Small, rectangular, yellowing single page from Ship's Register. Remnant of a page cut from a ship's register showing names and other details of four convicts: Joseph Bickermore, William Voiles, Thomas Jones and James Walsh. The column headings are printed in black print with handwritten information in black ink underneath, which has faded to sepia, on one side of the page. The page was cut from its original register for use in repairing and re-binding a book from the Prison Library. Some stitching holes from this repair are visible, and a dark blue ink, circular stamp is visible on the left side of the page, stamped upside-down, reading 'FREMANTLE/ PRISON/ LIBRARY'.

Historical information

Old publications, like Ships' Registers, were often used to repair library books in the Fremantle Prison Library.

Contextual Information

These men were transported on the ship 'Edwin Fox', which arrived in Fremantle in 1858. The convict James Walsh referred to here is Convict no. 5320, a butcher by trade, who died in September 1862 of lung disease. Not to be mistaken for the convict artist and forger James Walsh (convict no. 3176 and later 5569).
