Box Iron
A heavy metal hollow iron, in which the lid lifts to place coals in the body of the iron. The lid of the iron has a scalloped edge and there are holes around the bottom edges of the iron. Inside the iron the base has small knobs, there may have been a grate that fitted in the base. On one side of the body of the iron is a darker rusted piece of metal.
These irons were used extensively by women in rural districts who had wood fires in their homes. This iron was used in the 19th and 20th Centuries. The lid of the iron is lifted and hot coals were placed inside the iron on the grate. There are air holes at the bottom of the lid and round air holes at the bottom of the body of the iron.
