Overview

Long narrow rectangular varnished wood body. V shaped groove along the bottom edge. Square hole near middle on top edge. On one side along bottom half are two wooden panels that double the width of the body. Angled gap between the two panels. A knife shaped wood insert with a wedge shaped blade and a rounded handle at the top end inserted into the hole in the top edge. Wood rectangular insert wedged inside the V shaped insert.

Historical information

This tool was used by Henry Buckingham in the late 1890s and 1900s. Henry became a carpenter, wagon builder and wheelwright in Kelmscott. His father Thomas Buckingham Junior is known to earn his income making furniture in the 1860s. In c1897 he purchased a portion of his fathers Roleystone property to establish the orchard known as Bangup. Henry would marry Lucy J Fancote in 1905 and raise a daughter, Sybil (Mrs Sybil Gwynne). In his diary entry for the 1st of March 1898 he records: 'Mending traps, making wagons and carts, mending Bob March's carriage, etc.'. This tool may have been used in the construction of a house in 1905 at the Bangup orchard.
