BASKET, SEWING - CANE

Overview

Brown, woven cane, compartmented basket used 1880 to 1890 for sewing materials. Two round cane handles on top with cane loops as latch and a long piece of cane to push through loops to lock (attached by string). Square at base, rounded on top. Hinged by pieces of cane halfway up from base. Basket opens from top into three separate compartments. One compartment has another hinged lid.

Historical information

Glenview Guest House was owned and operated by Kenneth William Gilmour and his wife Lilah Constance (nee Allum) from the mid-1920s to the 1940s. The guest house was regularly advertised in local newspapers and boasted views of Churchman’s Valley, Canning
