PHOTOGRAPH: 'WELCOME HOME' TO RETURNED SUBIACO SERVICEMEN
1918The original sepia image shows a seated gathering taken from the stage across tables of the guests. Tables are arranged vertically, with the table of honour laid horizontally across the front of the image. The hall is hung with flags of various nations and decorated with palm boughs. The tables are decorated with vases of flowers. Assembled guests of civilians and soldiers. Serving women are dressed in identical white with dark badges on the blouse. Handwritten on the back: 'Welcome Home' to returned soldiers. Subiaco 2nd July 1918.' Venue West's Theatre
The Western Mail dated 6 September 1918 talks about the event held in Subiaco. Another article dated 28 June 1918 invites the Servicemen to attend.
"On Tuesday evening next, at West's Picture Hall, Subiaco, the Subiaco Returned Sailors and Soldiers' Welcome Home Committee will tender all the returned sailors and soldiers residents of the district a reception and dinner. The dinner will commence at 7 o'clock, and the State Commandant (Colonel Courtney DS.O.), Colonel H. Pope. C.B., the president of the Returned Sailors and Soldiers' Association, Lieutenant-Colonel Roberts, D.S-O., and Dr.Aberdeen have been invited. Invitation is also extended to the parents and lady friends of the returned men. The committee are anxious to hear at once from any returned men who have not yet received their invitations, and these the secretary (Mr. Treweek, 453 Hay-street) will be glad to issue on application. The State Commandant has granted permission to all returned soldiers to wear their uniform at this function"
