PHOTOGRAPH: EIGHT HOUR DAY PARADE

c. 1910
Overview

The original black and white image shows a street parade. The accompanying typewritten text states: 'Eight Hour Parade in Hay Street near Catherine Street. The parade was held once a year on a Monday, now known as Labor Day, and was organised by the Trade Unions. The procession came along Hay Street, up Rokeby Road, finishing near Shenton Park when a sports meeting was conducted.' The photograph is taken from the upper level of a building and two small children can be seen, sharing the balcony. The procession is led by a group predominantly of women and is followed by councillors wearing ceremonial badges of honour. They are followed by a pack of boy scouts. Far down the street are the forms of a couple of trams. Spectators line the opposite side of the street, children with bicycles, children standing on the road or pavement, individuals walking alongside the parade or groups watching from the side of a wooden picket fence or beside the shops. The sign of the shop clearly reads: 'Subiaco Fish Supply'. Several bill board advertisements are distinguishable: Rexona Soap, Amgoorie Tea, Champions Vinegar, Golden Wash, Aspro. A street lamp hangs overhead in the centre of the image.
