On p.111 of Grandfather was a Policeman by Mollie Bentley, Sgt. Peacocke is mentioned: "Owners of hotels in country towns were sometimes people of influence, and interference with their means of making a good livelihood had to be handled tactfully. When Daniel Connor, owner of a Toodyay hotel wrote to the Attorney General to complain about Sergeant Peacocke, Lance Corporal Parker and Constable Giles who had made some arrests during a brawl at the hotel, Colonial Secretary Barlee commented that Connor took 'a lively interest in such matters' because of his financial connections.... Magistrate EW Landor who enquired into the conduct of the police reported that 'Sergeant Peacocke is said by the magistrates, and by the neighbourhood generally...to be an inoffensive, quiet and conciliatory officer.'
The Police Gazette of WA on Wednesday July 17, 1878 notes that Sgt John Peacocke was transferred to Geraldton from Newcastle on 12 July 1878. He was to be in charge of the Geraldton Sub-district.
In 1888, due to staff reductions, he left the police force and moved to Victoria.
