Mr Wiliam Albert Furniss owned the Furniss Building 47 Bay View Tce which was built in 1927 and demolished 1973. Retailed own bicycle called the 'Scarlett Runner'. Remembered chiefly for the life-sized figure in sheet metal seated on a bicycle mounted on a beam over the lane beside the shop. This brightly painted figure with glass sauce bottle stoppers for eyes was known as the Square Man, he signified their motto: a Square Man for a Square Deal.
