CARPENTER'S BRACE

Overview
Timber brace with turned wooden handle at one end (the head) and a brass fitting at the other end to take the bit (not present).
Middle is shaped as a grip for for the hand to hold and operate.
Historical information
Estimated to date from the nineteenth or early 20th centuries.
Hand-powered drilling tool used in woodworking, consisting of a brace (the rotating tool) and a bit (an auger bit that is fastened into the brace). It allowed the user to bore holes into wood by applying pressure to the top while rotating the handle. Used for tasks such as furniture making, cabinetry, timber framing and carpentry.
