Historical information

Dr Donald Rupert Charles Tregonning (known as Trigger) served in the Light Horse Field Ambulance in Gallipoli in the First World War, and then completed his medical training, before purchasing the Claremont General Practice in 1918. He married Florence Agar who nursed in his practice. The couple had two sons: Donald John Kennedy 'Ken' and twin brother Bruce Tregonning. Dr Tregonning was a much-loved local General Practitioner until his tragic early death from pneumonia in 1935 at the age of 43.

Tregonning was a keen sportsman, obtaining the nickname ‘Trigger’ after securing a perfect score in an Interschool Rifle Shooting competition. His first real sporting love though was hockey. In 1928 Tregonning was elected captain of Western Australia’s first state team and later the captain of the first Australian Hockey Team for a match against New Zealand in Sydney, 1932. Tregonning went on to captain the State team five times, captain the Suburban Club and take on the role of President of the Western Australian Hockey Association for many years. Dr Tregonning was also a keen yachtsman and skipper-owner of the racing cruiser Roma. He was a prominent member of both the Royal Perth and the Claremont Yacht Clubs and won the Governor’s Cup race in 1933.
