The web site Joemasonspage which is a blog for memories of East Anglia tells a great story about the "copper stick"
Wooden Copper Stick
A very light, wooden stick for a laundry copper that has been formed from a single piece of wood that tapers gradually towards the base. A knob has been shaped at the top of the stick for use as a handle. On knob there is a carving of a woman's face and just down on the shaft there is writing which has been worn away but the word "copper" can still be read.
