Overview

Souvenir postcard booklet minus postcards, containing only a description in French and English of the place called Boulogne sur-Mer in France. The front and back covers are red and very fragile with age. The covers are not attached anymore and there is a large tear in the front cover.

Historical information

Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE from her sweetheart Private Edward Charles MOUCHEMORE 6351 who served with the 28th Battalion during the First World War. They met in Albany while attending the same school. Edward was killed in action at Bullecourt, France on 3 October 1918 at the age of 22. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front “Boulogne sur-mer / 24 Cartes Postales / Detachables / 24 Detachable Postcards / LL / Modele depose”. Inside the booklet “BOULOGNE- ON-SEA / Boulogne is the chief french fishing port and an important export centre for textile / goods, row hides, game, poultry and eggs. / It was founded under the name of Gesoriacum, then Benonia, and made famous by the / coming of Caligula. It was taken by the English in 1544, who occupied it for nearly / 7 years. It was from Boulogne that Napoleon, then First Consul, planned the invasion / of England and gathered an army of 150000 men at the Camp de Boulogne. It was / out another mistake on the part of the incapabe and injudicious Villaret-Joyeuse that / spoiled this master plan of the Emperor’s. Shortly after (Aug. 16th 1804) Napoleon 1st dis- / tributed the first crosses of the Legion of Honour to the brave men of the Great Army at / the Camp de Boulogne. / The Birthplace of : Godefroy-de-Bouillon, Daunou, Frederic Sauvage and the great / critique Sainte-Beuve. / The principal buildings and curiosities are : the Cathedral with the Chapel of the / Sacred-Heart, the ‘Vierge a la Barque’, the Crypt and the Calvary, the Palace of Justice, / the Chateau, the Theatre, The Mariette College, the Churches Saint-Francois-de-Sales / Saint-Pierre. And to mention more particularly : the Sailor’s Chapel, the South eastern / Villa, the Belfry, the Column to the Great Army, the Legion of Honour Monument, the / Portes Gayole and the Dunes, etc”.
