Photograph of a ruined flour mill

1959
Overview

Black and white photograph of a ruined four-storey flour mill.

Historical information

This photograph of the former Royal Steam Roller Flour Mill at Dongara was taken by Cecil Morrison Maley. He was a grandson of John Stephen Maley who built a flour mill at Dongara in 1871.
Cecil wrote on the back of the photograph "Maleys old mill Dongarra. June 59." This however, is not the flour mill John Maley built; by 1959 that structure had been long demolished.

Contextual Information

This photograph is important because it was taken by a member of the Maley family. It is also a significant indicator of the decline in family knowledge over generations. Cecil knew his grandfather had built a flour mill at Dongara, but had no further knowledge of that building and its history.
