George Knapp at the South Greenough State School. This was one of three State Government Schools along the Front Greenough Flats. The South Greenough State School was located on the corner of what are now the Brand Highway and Flat Rocks Road, just to the south of St James’ Anglican Church.
The school opened in 1871. The largest attendance was in 1887, with 20 boys and 7 girls.
Following the introduction of school buses, South Greenough State School closed in 1944.
The school ruins were demolished in 1993.
Leslie George Knapp (1915-1995) was the youngest child of George Henry Knapp and Ellen Clara Knapp (nee Stokes). They lived at Hillgrove Farm, to the south-west of the school.

This photograph is to date the only one in the collection showing a student of the South Greenough State School. It is part of a large collection of Knapp memorabilia held in the museum.
