TOOL: HATCHET, 'TOMAHAWK' (AXE)

c. 1912
Subcollections
Overview

The wedge-shaped blade has a curved cutting edge, as well as a deep notch on the lower curved side. A knob similar to a hammer's head projects at the opposite side. The flat wooden handle's edges are rounded off. This hand axe was often used by wooden case makers (fruit boxes, etc) and the notch was used to pull nails, while the knob was employed to hammer in the nails. The hatchet was also a domestic tool for splitting kindling. The name 'Tomahawk' probably derived from a brand name of a small hatchet made to an American pattern early this century.
