A large Second World War Royal Australian Air Force black Bakelite button with a crown at the top and an eagle in flight below. There is a shank on the reverse of the button face along with a reference number and the maker’s mark for Australian Consolidated Industries (ACI).

Historical information

Bakelite was an early form of plastic used to manufacture buttons in the Second World War for the Australian Military Forces. ACI Plastics Pty Ltd (Melbourne) made and supplied black and khaki plastic buttons to the Military between 1940 and 1953.This button is from a Royal Australian Airforce uniform.

Contextual information

The button was souvenired by Kingsley Charles MOHR (WX26433), who enlisted at Guildford on 9 August 1941. A Sapper in the Australian Mechanical Equipment Company he spent 1495 days on Active Service in Australia and 625 days on Overseas Service from September 1943 – August 1944 and 10 March – 6 December 1945 before being discharged at Karrakatta in Western Australia on 24 January 1946. MOHR had lived in Denmark, Western Australia, before enlisting and returned there after the war.
