CLUB FORMATION - NEWSPAPER ARTICLES
1966 - 1969Research during the lead up to MGGC’s 50th anniversary uncovered a sequence of newspaper articles that captured the various stages of the club’s formation. These articles, which appear to be all from “The West Australian” newspaper, were obtained from the State (Battye) Library of WA by club member Pam Webber or original newspaper print found in club and donated records.

9/9/1966 a) "Proposed Golf Club Seeks 150 Acres " Negotiations with the Melville Town Council for the lease of the land.
7/10/1966 b) "Meeting to Discuss Golf " Applecross Town Hall meeting to determine support for the project.
11/11/1966 c) "Private Golf Course Planned at Bull Creek " Melville Town Council decides against extending Point Walter golf course to 18 holes and supports private course development.
25/11/1966 d) "Approval for Golf Course Despite Some Objections " Melville Town Council councillors debate the benefits of a private golf course. Original print copy available labelled 'The West Australian - Melville Supplement'.
3/12/1966 e) "Councillor Fails in Bid to Delay Golf Project " Follows on from the previous article and outlines Council loan to the club
10/2/1967 f) "Golf Plan Still Awaits Decision " The land lease is considered by the WA Government’s Lands Minister
28/4/1967 g) "Go-Ahead for $160,000 Golf Course Given " Lands Department approves lease. This extract from the West Australian newspaper was contained in an album of club memorabilia donated by Dawn Johnston - Item 2022.343.
26/5/1967 h) "Golf Club Will Meet on Monday " A further public meeting and increased membership
30/6/1967 i) "Golf Course Will Be Built Soon " Melville Town Council approves the draft plan for the golf course
6/10/1967 j) "New Glades Golf Club Course Takes Shape " Course clearing completed fairways and greens to be seeded
1/12/1967 k) "Progress on Golf Course" Earthworks completed and work on irrigation system commenced
1/2/1968 l) "Club’s Opening Date Forecast " Course to be in use by the start of the 1969 season
10/4/1968 m) "$62,000 Loan For Golf Club " Melville Town Council loan approved
6/6/1968 n) "Council Will Lend Club Money " Three loan instalments provided
4/7/1968 o) "Loan Sought by Golf Club " A further $32,000 loan requested in order to complete clubhouse construction
7/11/1968 p) "450 Join New Golf Club" Membership now approaching approved limits
1/5/1969 q) "Major Golf Club Ready for Melville " Nearly $250,000 spent on new golf course with first tee shot due to be played on 3rd May. Another part copy of the article found in club records features a copy of an aerial picture of the course with pertinent features labelled. Two extracts cover this item.
