THE BELL

The club's bell is mounted on the north-west wall in the main lounge room. It is rung to gather people's attention, typically prior to the start of the day's golf presentations. Previously, it was also the honour for any person achieving a hole in one to ring the bell signalling a round of free drinks for all the players that were present.

In newsletter November 2001 the editor, and previous golf professional Peter Milton, provided the origins of the bell. That description is paraphrased below:

The bell was manufactured by John Maskew, a foundation member of the club. John was a senior Fitting and Machining lecturer at Wembley College around the time that the club was founded in the late 1960s. He cast the bell in the college foundry. He was also a keen yachtsman, and he plaited the rope. He subsequently presented the bell to the club.

At the time of the Newsletter (2001) there was a member by the name of Harry Albert who was also a lecturer at Wembley College at the same time as John Maskew. Coincidentally, it was Harry who machine finished the bell.

A wall plaque mounted on a jarrah wooden board honouring John Maskew as the donor of the bell was once mounted under the bell. The plaque appears in related record The Bell Plaque (2022.376b).

The bell was originally mounted in the sprig bar in 1980 before being relocated to its current position in the lounge room, presumably when the clubhouse was renovated in 2001 and the sprig bar ceased to exist.

The bell itself is 240mm wide and 230mm in height. The way the bell is mounted on the wall is integral in its structure.
