Black and White Photographic Postcard of Everett’s Corner, Stirling Terrace, Albany
c. 1912 - 1912A black and white photograph showing Everett’s Corner, a General Merchant’s Store located at 34-40 Stirling Terrace, Albany WA. The 2-storey building features rendered brick walls with large glass window shop fronts, ironwork balconies, timber posted verandahs, and parapet walls above the roof line.
Everett’s Corner is a significant building in Albany’s historic Stirling Terrace Precinct. In 1897 Edward Gamble Everett and his family arrived in Albany from South Australia. After running a successful grocery store in York Street E. G. Gamble is recorded as the owner of the vacant property next to Argyle House on Stirling Terrace in 1907 and in 1908 built a new house and shop. The first portion consisted of two shop fronts and a double storey balcony from where a drapery, grocery and direct importers operated. Next to this building, the corner of Stirling Terrace and Spencer Street was enclosed with a picket fence. In 1912 the corner portion of the shop was constructed. The property changed hands after 1926 and was a drapery business until 1941.

E.G. Everett was the son of a grocer who set up his own business in York Street. After acquiring a vacant lot next to Argyle House in Stirling Terrace the family built a house and new shop before extending the building on to the corner Lot; this became known as Everett’s Corner. The business was later managed by Captain George Charles Everett (son) until his untimely death in 1932, followed soon after by his mother. Edward retired in 1934 and died in 1936. Another of the Everetts’ sons, Major Eric Samuel Everett, was a Lieutenant in the 22nd Australian Machine Gun Company when he was awarded a Military Cross for his action on the Somme between the 10 and 20 April 1917. When he returned to Albany he also worked in his father’s store before moving to Perth in the 1920’s.
P. J. McCarthy bought the premises and in 1927 RR Payne and his family moved their drapery business into the building. L. R. Gilbert then took over the drapery business until 1941. Later, the building became Albany Backpackers and a Fishing Tackle shop with the latter becoming a homewares store more recently.
