On front “Port Said. Bateau traversant le Canal de Suez. D.J.L. Port Said”. On rear addressed to “Master C. Denney / 74 Nineth Avenue / Maylands / Perth / Western Australia”. “One active service / No Stamps / available. / Dear Cyril, / Just a few / lines to let you know / how I am getting on. / Good trip coming over, / sea calm as a lake. / Nice sight coming / down Suez Canal. / How are the ducks & / chickens. How many / googes do you get now. / With love, / From your / loving brother / Jack.” Also on rear is a blue ink stamp, “C.M.F. / RELEASED / BY CENSORS”.
The First World War postcard of the Suez Canal was sent by Sapper John ‘Jack’ DENNEY, 142, 1st Divisional Signal Company, AIF, to his relative Cyril. Jack enlisted on 25/ August 1914 at Blackboy Hill WA. Jack was killed in action at the Dardanelles on the 27 April 1915, aged 20 years.
