Denney / 74 Nineth Avenue / Maylands / Perth / Western Australia”. “One active service / No Stamps / available. / Dear Cyril, / Just a few / lines to let you know / how I am getting on. / Good trip coming over, / sea calm as a lake. / Nice sight coming / down Suez Canal. / How are the ducks & / chickens. How many / googes do you get now. / With love, / From your / loving brother / Jack.” Also on rear is a blue ink stamp, “C.M.F. / RELEASED / BY CENSORS”.

Contextual information

The First World War postcard of the Suez Canal was sent by Sapper John ‘Jack’ DENNEY, 142, 1st Divisional Signal Company, AIF, to his relative Cyril. Jack enlisted on 25/ August 1914 at Blackboy Hill WA. Jack was killed in action at the Dardanelles on the 27 April 1915, aged 20 years.
