Overview

A black and white photographic postcard of F. W. Bevilaqua’s Clothing Emporium with a framed border. The two-storey building in York Street has a parapet wall above the roof line. Three (3) men are standing near the posts of the verandah at the front of the building. The postcard has an ornate border resembling a picture frame.

Historical information

F. W. Bevilaqua’s Clothing Emporium was located in York Street and opened in 1908. The shop sold clothing for men, women and children, and advertised frequently in the Albany Advertiser. The business was sold in 1913 to J.H. Hay (a prominent Perth retailer).

Contextual information

Frank Walter Bevilaqua was born in South Australia in 1864, the second son of F.L. Bevilaqua. He worked in his father’s business before moving to Tasmania where he worked for the Mt Lyell Mining and Railway Company. In 1898 he moved to Albany and became an assistant at Drew, Robinson and Co. From 1902 he worked for E. Barnett & Co for 3 years before opening his own business in Broomehill in 1906, followed by the emporium in Albany in 1908.
Frank married Violet Ann Cowie in 1899 and was involved in the local community, including funding prizes for students at local schools. A diabetic, he died suddenly in 1932, aged 67. Violet died aged 72 in 1940, and both are buried in Albany Memorial Cemetery.
