THREE TRUCKS FITTED WITH GAS PRODUCERS
1939 - 1949A black & white photo (slightly stained) of three flat top trucks. All are fitted with a 'gas producer'.
Two of these vehicles have rubber tyres on the wheel and the other one has metal wheels with no covering.
Behind the gas producer on the first trucks is a square tank. All are in a paddock
All are fitted with a 'gas producer', so the photo was probably taken during the Second World War years or afterwards up until 1949 when petrol rationing finally ceased in Australia.
During WW2, the supply of petrol was severely limited. As a consequence, across Australia trucks, buses, cars, tractors and even small trains were fitted with charcoal burners producing gas that was piped through to the motor.
Based on the appearance of other photos in the Shire of Toodyay's museum collection (inc. 2001.1703), the location is possibly the Manmanning property owned by Peter Salvaire in the Dowerin Shire.
