TRUCK LOADED WITH HAY BALES
c. 1935 - 1945Black & white photo of truck with enclosed frame work to hold load of hay bales open windows in doors - air vents on bottom side of bonnet.
Trees and paddock in background - wood fence at rear of vehicle. Spoke wheels, cylinder on the running board - possibly vacuum tank for brakes.
The vehicle appears to be an American-designed commercial chassis—sharing strong visual traits with a 1929–1930 Chevrolet or International A-Series truck—featuring:
• A long engine hood with distinct vertical cooling louvers.
• Distinctive sweeping front mudguards (fenders) from that era.
• Spoked wheels with early pneumatic tires rather than solid rubber.
While the truck dates from around 1930, it is not pictured brand new.
• There is noticeable road wear and weathering on the body panels and running board.
• The factory body has been modified or retrofitted with a custom, high-clearance timber stake bed to maximize the space for carting hay bales.
• In rural Western Australia during the Great Depression and the years leading into WWII, farmers routinely ran these rugged commercial vehicles for 5 to 15 years, maintaining them through heavy daily use.
