Bed Warmer - brass

Overview

pierced brass bed warmer - long arm and a circular pan at the top with a pierced lid

Historical information

The bed warmer is filled with hot coals and placed in bed, moved around to warm bed and dry damp sheets.
The warmer was made of either brass or copper, and filled with hot coals, had a long handle so it could be pushed under the bedcovers. If the bed was dry, the warmer had to be constantly moved so it would not scorch the sheets - this was not usually a problem as sometimes the bedding was still damp. This warmer has a floral pattern marked out in piercings to the lid, which allowed the heat to escape.
