Contextual information

Hymns Ancient and Modern is a seminal Anglican hymnal first published in 1861, combining traditional and contemporary hymnody to standardize worship in the Church of England.

The sterling silver mounted front cover is embossed with a design of Sir Joshua Reynolds' 1787 painting "Angel's Heads" which is a study of a young girl's head from five different angles, and was a popular motif in the Edwardian period.
