CAP, CRICKET - ARMADALE CRICKET CLUB

Overview

Maroon cricket cap with the letters [ACC] embroidered in gold above visor. Eight sections to crown with piece of fabric at top of crown sections which had a button in it. Inside of cap is lined, crown is beige and around side is black. Holes on right hand front of cap. Tag with makers information on inside of cap.

Historical information

This cap was worn by Laurie Blackburn, son of Robert and Gwen Blackburn who owned Blackburn Bakery in Armadale, when he played for the Armadale Cricket Club. As a child he was keen to join a number of sports clubs but none of them had junior sports programs. He joined the Armadale Cricket Club as a teenager and competed against the adults to get a game. He also played tennis for Perth Boys where he attended high school.
He started to play badminton as a junior and in 1952 was selected for the Western Australian badminton team.
Laurence regularly played tennis, cricket and football, mainly for the local Armadale Clubs. Badminton though Laurence played at a state league level and represented Western Australia around 15 times. After his retirement from the state league Laurence remained involved with badminton as a junior coach.

This object is part of a collection that tells the story of the many different community sporting organisations that have and continue to exist in the City of Armadale. Sport has played an important role in bringing communities together and building identities.With the influx of new residents to the region in the late 1800s local sporting clubs began to form as people came together looking to form a community through shared sporting interests. Sporting clubs can also show how established communities begin to grow and diversify with clubs being formed by new emerging communities.
