Lord Derby Scheme comic postcard 2

c. 1915
Overview

Colourful comic postcard featuring a cherubic child with its head, hands and toes peeping out above and below a Lord Derby Scheme armband.
The card has a white background. The cylindrical armband is very realistic, being brown in colour and showing the red felt King's Crown emboidered to the centre. The child resembles a kewpie doll with a round, cheeky face and a few loose wisps of hair.
At the bottom of the card are the words 'I'se all armlet!' above which is the artist's name - all written in blue ink.
The reverse of the card shows the publisher's details. There is no writing on the back of the card.

Historical information

The Lord Derby Scheme armbands were worn by men who had formally volunteered for Army Service but who had yet to be issued with a uniform.
The scheme was introduced in November 1915 by Lord Derby, Edward Stanley, 17th Earl of Derby (1865–1948) after which it was named. He was Lord Kitchener's choice for Director General of Recruiting.
The scheme represented a final attempt to avoid full-scale Conscription.
Men aged between 18 & 41 were asked to attest their readiness to serve in the British Army, on the understanding that all single men would be called up before the youngest married volunteers.
Unfortunately by the scheme’s closing date of December 1915, more than a million men had failed to come forward, resulting in compulsory military service being introduced in January 1916.

Many humorous postcards were released around this time to encourage men to enlist.

Flora White (1878-1953) was an English artist who was taught at Brighton School of Art. She lived above the family stationers at 70 West St, Brighton.
For over 20 years, Flora painted hundreds of postcards and greetings cards based on nursery rhymes and fairy tales, as well as illustrating books.
