WHITFIELD SON
1899 - 1902Sepia coloured photo, young man dressed in army band uniform.
Three 'V' stripes on the right sleeve and insignia on the upper right sleeve. A bugle is tucked under his right arm. On his head he wears a 'hard' peaked helmet with braid and insignia.
The band uniform shown here was worn at the time of the Boer War. It was scarlet in colour and the rank shown is Sergeant or Staff Sergeant. Such uniforms were not worn overseas and the WA contingents all wore khaki (except for the 1st Contingent which wore blue tunics and puttees until khaki became available). At the time, band members took on the role of stretcher-bearers during active service.
