HAPPY NEW YEAR POST CARD FEATURING SCENES OF TOODYAY

c. 1910
Subcollections
Overview

This is a black and white post card of Toodyay scenes/photos (the latter in sepia?), arranged in semi-circular fashion across the card.
The phrase 'Happy New Year' appears on the lower edge.
The scenes in the photos include the main street (Stirling Tce), Avon River, sheep and rural settings. A number of Splendid Everlastings and a rose bloom are also featured on the post card. The seven tiny photographs are around 3cm x 2cm each.

Historical information

The photographs are all captioned "Toodyay" which indicates the card was produced after May 1910 when the name change from Newcastle occurred.
The 'H.G. Lamont' photograph shows a building situated on the corner of Stirling Terrace and what was then known as Clinton Street, next to the Freemason's Hotel. (In 2022 all that remains of the building is a set of steps at the corner of this intersection). This particular photo was taken no earlier than 1908 because Henry George Lamont took over the Newcastle Trading Company in July that of year. By 1910 he had moved to Northampton; his business premises at Toodyay were advertised 'To Let' in October 1909.

Contextual Information

A second postcard of this design is held in the collections of the Toodyay Historical Society. An article in the historical society's Duidgeeana newsletter no 19 dated Jan 2011 by Jenny Edgecombe, shares some historical research about HG Lamont and Toodyay that was prompted by this postcard. "Initially, the card was scanned and enlarged, revealing the pins that had been used to hold the photographs in position. Possibly the card was home-made, or perhaps early professional photographers habitually used such methods."
