WATCH: POCKET, GOLD HUNTER, ROBERTS FAMILY

Overview

Pocket watch with circular, gold-plated outer case, centre design on front, both open on hinge, front face opening to reveal watch face and the rear face, opening to reveal gold plated watch back. The central design is circular, belt shape with buckle enclosing a shield exterior of watch. Both faces covered with a fine mesh design which is worn in places. The face has the hour markings in Roman numerals in black on a white enamel face. The second hand is missing and the watch is branded 'Elgin'. Inside the face covering is engraved 55635188 and inside the back covering is a small marking with the same number and a jeweller's repair mark of GD XX 5664.

The Elgin National Watch Company, commonly known as Elgin Watch Company, was a major US watch maker from 1864 to 1968. The company sold watches under the names Elgin, Lord Elgin, and Lady Elgin.
For nearly 100 years, the company's manufacturing complex in Elgin, Illinois, was the world's largest site dedicated to watchmaking.
This watch is circa 1911 which was the hunter style closed case watch.
