Charlotte Simmons
A sepia tone full-length portrait of a woman seated on an ornately carved wooden chair. She wears a long, dark blue dress and her hand rests over a book on a small table.
Charlotte Wood was married to Bunbury man Thomas Simmons in the early 1860s. In 1863 Simmons bought 40 acres on the Preston River at Boyanup, and soon Thomas, Charlotte and baby Eliza moved to their new home. Being among the first settlers in the region, the Simmons family were very isolated in the early days. After about a year, Charlotte gave birth to James, the first settlers' child to be born in Boyanup. More than 60 years later, the Boyanup community held a ball in honour of its oldest resident 'Granny Simmons'.
Mrs Simmons' obituary appears in the South Western Times on May 17 1935. She was 91 years old.
