1966 Australian Baseball Championships programme
A 1966 Australian Baseball Championships program for the Claxton Shield Series played in Adelaide, South Australia. The front cover has a blue-tinted image looking across Adelaide's Victoria Square to the General Post Office building. The image is overprinted with the words 'Claxton Shield Series' in black. A yellow border at the bottom of the cover has the words 'Australian Baseball Championships Adelaide 1966' printed in red. Also within the border is the price of the program printed in black on a red circle. The inside pages are white with black print and include information on South Australian office bearers, history of the Claxton Shield, player profiles, Championships program, playing schedule and corporate advertising; also Junior Baseball and Night Baseball in South Australia and the winners. The back cover depicts an advertisement for Grenadiers cigarettes in black print on a white background.
The 1966 Claxton Shield was the 27th annual Claxton Shield, an Australian baseball tournament, and was held in Adelaide between 26 July and 6 August. The participants were South Australia, New South Wales, Victoria, Western Australia and Queensland. Games were played at Norwood Oval, Glenelg Oval and Thebarton Oval.
The South Australian team included Ian Chappell (catcher), playing in his 3rd series. The Victorian team included Alan Connelly (Australian cricketer). The Western Australian team had Colin Guest (Test Cricket fast bowler).
The series was won by South Australia who finished ahead of Victoria on run percentage for their 9th title.

This program forms part of the Baseball WA Museum & Archives' collection of Claxton Shield Series baseball programs. It was donated by Ernie Mews, a member of the 1966 Western Australian team.
The program has historic significance as the player profiles reveal that some Australian Test cricketers also played baseball for their respective States. It is a rare item and has excellent provenance.
