Overview

A black wooden-frame displays a black and white photograph of the 1938 Western Australian baseball team. The cardboard photo surround has hand-written details, in black ink, of the name of the competition, where and when it was held, Western Australia's final placing, and the names of the team members.

Historical information

The 1938 Australian Baseball Series was held in Perth, Western Australia. Four State teams, Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia, were competing for the Claxton Shield. The Western Australian team were runners-up. It was Western Australia's second year competing in the Australian Baseball Carnival for the Claxton Shield trophy and the first time the carnival was held in Perth.

Contextual Information

This photograph was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the family of Glen Dunstan, Vice-Captain of the 1938 State team.

Dunstan's career in Western Australian baseball during the 1930s and 1940s included roles as a player, manager, coach, selector and administrator, at both League and State levels. He was also Australian Team selector in 1947 and 1948 and was named Australian Team Manager in 1947.

In 1949 he became the first Life Member of the West Australian Baseball League in appreciation of his service to baseball since the inception of the game in this State in 1935.

Statement of significance

Of historic significance, this well-provenanced photograph records the names and images of just the second Western Australian team to represent the State in the Australian Baseball Championships. Baseball was a relatively new competitive sport in Western Australia at that time and was becoming very popular as a social pastime for both players and spectators. This rare photograph is in good condition and has excellent provenance.
