Historical information

The Asian Baseball Championship is the main championship tournament between national baseball teams in Asia, governed by the Baseball Federation of Asia (BFA). It is held every other year in odd-numbered years and since 1983 it also functions as the qualification games for the Baseball at the Summer Olympics if the event year is exactly one year before the Olympics.

The 1983 Asian Baseball Championship was the 12th continental tournament held by the BFA. The tournament was held in Seoul, South Korea for the fourth time, and was won by the hosts for their fourth Asian Championship. Chinese Taipei and Japan shared second place, Australia (4th) and Philippines (5th).

Contextual Information

Due to Maurie Reynolds' well-honed umpiring ability, he was selected to represent Australia on four occasions: 1983/84, 1984/85, 1987/88 and 1988/89. These appointments were in Asia and also for international tournaments held in Australia.

In 1983 Reynolds was a member of the Australian baseball team that participated in the 12th Asian Baseball Championships in Seoul, Korea. He has donated his team blazer from that tournament to the Baseball WA Museum and Archives.

A long-time member of the West Australian Baseball Umpires Association, he was awarded Life Membership of the Association in 1979.
