COIN HOLDER: SOVEREIGN CASE, SILVER AND NICKEL METAL, COIN HOLDER

Overview

Flat, rectangular metal box with a link to hang it by in the centre of one of the short sides.
The coin purse is designed to hold a sovereign, half sovereign, shilling, six-pence, and three pence. Nickle with silver vermeil with beautiful ivy and acanthus scroll design on both sides. The Sovereign markings also feature an English rose while the other coins have a delicate and intricate mandala engraved design.
On one face are circular depressions for containing 1/-, 6d and 3d coins. The depressions have a spring loaded cover which can be forced down to hold the coins. These covers have '1/-', '6d' and '3d' embossed. The rest of the surface has embossed scrollwork of leaves and vines. The opposite side of the container has two depressed containers for half-sovereign and sovereign, with leaves and vines embossed on remainder of surface.

Made by J W Benson.
James William Benson was an accomplished and skilled craftsman who formed his practice in 1880 in London. His work is well regarded and often featured in the British Museum as he received a Royal Warrant and often served many royal families, including HRH Queen Victoria.
May be worn from a chain around the neck, an Albert chain connected to a waistcoat, or suspended from a chatelain.
