BODICE -GREY SILK SHANTUNG BRAID DECORATION HIGH COLLAR [PART OF BODICE & SKIRT ENSEMBLE- NO SKIRT H

Overview

Dark grey silk shantung bodice with square yoke front and back. Above this is a small circular yoke and high boned collar with horizontal tucks. Edges of both yokes are decorated with braid in this design. Centre front has double-breasted effect with covered buttons and braid loops on each side. Upper and lower sleeves - lower is of ruched material, narrowing to a fine wrist with hook and eye fastening and looped braid trimming. Above this is upper sleeve with a cuff, also trimmed with looped braid. Two large folds over bustline and three each side of centre back. Bodice fasteners at centre back with hooks and eyes. Fully lined in pale grey fine cotton-lining hooks together separately at centre back. Belonged to donor's mother, Mrs. E. Doggett. 18/3/99: Heavy stains in underarm, rough darning and more insect damage. Conservator questions whether it is shantung and suggested Thai silk.
