Historical information

This plaque, that features a mould representation of the Centenary Sculpture produced by Owen Davies for the City of Armadale Centenary, was presented to Mr Roland 'Roly' Richardson who in 1994 was a member of the Armadale & Districts Chamber of Commerce, was the chair of the Centenary Committee and between 1981 and 1993 a City of Armadale councillor.
In 1994 the City of Armadale celebrated the 100th anniversary of the gazetting of the Kelmscott Road Board that over the 100 years evolved into the City of Armadale.
The Centenary Sculpture was created by Western Australian artist Owen Davies to commemorate the centenary of the City of Armadale. Instigated by the Armadale Chamber of Commerce, this sculpture is a tribute to the history and heritage of the area. The 1890s male figure represents the pioneers and tradespeople that contributed greatly to the growth of Armadale. The Y-shaped junction that he draws in the sand highlights the two highways, Albany and South Western that intersect in Armadale and resembles the design of the Armadale Council crest. He sits next to the waterwheel signifying the importance of the creeks and dams in the area. The seats around the sculpture invite people to rest in a subtle tribute to the local brick and manufacturing industries.
