Katanning Railway Cairn

A photograph of the Katanning Railway Cairn, taken in 2002. The memorial is 5kms from Katanning on the side of the railway line. Trimmer road is adjacent. The Memorial was placed there in 1939 by the Katanning Historical Society. This has been recorded as the place where the lines from Albany and Beverley joined in 1889. Local legend has it that the line was joined with a silver spike, It has never been found or confirmed. In 2002 the line was shifted on several occasions. The piece of line that extends from the cement memorial has the letters WALC on it. It is the line used by the WA Land Co the original owners and builders of the Great Southern Line.

The inscription on the cairn reads "This Cairn marks the ?ompletion of the Great Southern Railway, on 1st June 1889. Erected 1st May 1949".
