LARGE RSSIL BADGE 1920
1920Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia badge in worn condition.
The obverse of the shield shaped badge is surmounted by a King's Crown with white enamel in the centre.
The centre of the badge shows a sailor and a soldier in raised detail.
A blue enamel circle surrounds the central detail and has 'RETURNED SAILORS & SOLDIERS / IMPERIAL LEAGUE' in raised brass lettering.
The outer edges of the shield are white enamel.
At the bottom of the badge is a red enamelled scroll with 'AUSTRALIA' written in raised brass lettering.
On the reverse of the badge is attached two brooch pins for securing the badge to clothing. The serial number 4343 is impressed on the back along with the maker's mark which is partially worn:
Sheridan’s Badges and Engraving was founded in 1913 as Austral Engravers and grew by the 1920s to become the largest badge maker and engraver in Western Australia; the name was changed first to Sheridan’s Austral Engraving and Stamping Company and then to Sheridan’s Engraving and Metal Stamping Company (around 1924).

This style of RSL member's badge was worn from 1919 to the early years of the Second World War when the organisation was known as the Returned Sailors and Soldiers Imperial League of Australia.
In 1940 the name was changed to the Returned Sailors', Soldiers', and Airmen's Imperial League of Australia.
Further changes occurred over time until the current name, the Returned and Services League of Australia was adopted in 1990.
