A rebate plane is specifically designed to create rebates, which are step-like cuts along the edge or end of a piece of wood. These cuts allow two pieces of wood to fit together neatly, often forming stronger joints than simple butt joints. Common applications include cabinet making, picture framing, and fitting back panels into furniture.

Details
Date range has been based on the body style (typical of the 1800s right before all-metal planes became the factory standard) and the brass hardware. The thumbscrew and flat brass depth-stop mechanism on the side became common features during the industrial expansion of the 1840s to 1880s to help woodworkers make more precise cuts.
