Historical information

Sydney Stubbs was born in Warrnambool, Victoria on the 19th July 1861 and was the second eldest of 14 children. Married Martha Harriet Jeffery on the 3rd June 1891 in Bendigo, Victoria. Arrived in Western Australia in 1895. Returning officer for the Claremont council election 18th November 1903. Mayor of Claremont 1901–1903. Mayor of Perth 1906–1907. Member of both Houses of State Parliament. In 1911 became the Member for Wagin and represented the electorate in the Legislative Assembly until 1947. From 1930-1933 Sydney was Speaker of the House. In 1947 Sydney was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George.

Sydney and Martha had five children. Hazel (married Sir Alexander Small), Isabelle (married Jack Beaton), Violet (married Norman Brearley), Maude and Sydney (Junior).

Sydney was an active patron of sports, tennis, bowling, football and cricket. Founder Claremont Yacht Club. Life member Royal Agricultural Society.

Martha died circa 7 August 1953.
Sydney died on 30 July 1953.
