COOPER'S BOAT SHED, 1910
1910Sepia postcard with circular image. Looking north from the river to the boatshed and rear of three houses facing Victoria Avenue.The boatshed behind the centre house has a lean-to to the left. Around the shed are boats with a fence along the waters' edge and bamboos to the left. Handwritten on back [ Coopers' Boat Shed/Claremont/1910].
His father George Cooper Snr who hailed from Nottinghamshire, arrived at Fremantle with his family in 1856. George was born in Claremont and was apprenticed to his father at a boat builder. Later worked for Chamberlain's Boat Building Enterprises in Fremantle. He married Emily Chamberlain. In 1910 he built the boatshed at 8 Victoria Ave where he constructed river craft & pearling luggers. As well as his boat building enterprise, Mr Cooper bought out the boat hire business which belonged to Mr J J Vick {called 'Vix' Pleasure Boats}, located at Claremont Jetty from 1905-1927.
