On the 28th of August 2001 the year 8,9 and 10 boys football squad from Bunbury High made their way to Hay Park for a day of sport and fun at the annual Winter Carnival. Our coach was Mr. Ginanne and captain for the day was Chris Migliore. We were in B division and thought that we had a good chance of winning the day. The games consisted of two twenty-minute halves and we had a half an hour lunch break after our second game.
We got there early in the morning on the bus and then went to the change rooms to get ready to go up against Collie. It was tight the whole game and by the end it came out a draw. We weren’t too unhappy, we would have preferred a win. Our second match was against Augusta-Margaret River and as we thought, this team was be the toughest out of the rest. We were in front at half time but couldn’t go on with the job and went down by 2 goals in the end.
Our third and final game before the final was against Harvey and we kind of had a hint that they were going to be easy. But at half time we were only a goal up and we needed this win for a chance to play off against Augusta for first position. So we got a rev up and came out firing and won the game by 8 goals.
So here we were, in the grand final, up against the only team that had beaten us and things weren’t going too well with one of our big men out, but the rest of the team was ready to win. In the first half we were against the wind, but we were still getting the ball down to our forwards who just couldn’t kick enough goals, but at half time we were in front but not by much. In the second half we got tired I think and just fell away going down by the same margin that we lost to them in the first game.
