Medal group of 5 medals awarded to Captain Mary Aitken Brown MBE, Australian Army Medical Womens Service, World War 2
Mary (Mamie) Aitken Brown was born in 1905. Having decided she would never marry, she enrolled at the London Academy of Dressmaking in 1934 and sailed to England where she was presented at Court. After returning to Western Australia she enlisted at Lucknow Hospital (January 1940) for voluntary service in military hospitals through the Australian Red Cross Society. She joined the Enlisted Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) that later formed the nucleus of the Australian Army Medical Women’s Service (AAMWS). Miss Brown published a book ‘The bending road’ (B/BRO), an autobiography of her time in England and also wrote ‘On and off duty 1938 to 1945’an account of service in the VAD and AAMWS.
